Our Approach to Sustainability

How we build matters as much as what we build.

Every target we set and every action we take starts with our people: our workforce, our clients, our partners and the generations who will inherit what we build today

A note from Ger Ronayne

JJ Rhatigan CEO

For us, sustainability is a business priority. It is fundamental to how we create lasting value for our clients, strengthen our business and support our people. It also reflects our ambition to grow responsibly and make a positive difference to communities.

In my experience, the companies that lean into today’s challenges are the ones that lead tomorrow. This mindset shapes how we approach climate action and inclusive growth and it’s why we developed our sustainability strategy under a Responsible Business Framework aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This report also marks a deliberate step towards alignment with ESRS reporting by 2028, by building the data and governance to get there.

“In my experience, the companies that lean into today’s challenges are the ones that lead tomorrow.”

Crucially, this strategy was not written in isolation. It was shaped by hundreds of voices from across the business, through surveys, workshops and real project experience and by listening closely to the clients, partners and communities we work alongside, whose expectations and priorities helped sharpen our focus on what matters most. The People are the Plan reflects how this strategy was built and how it is being delivered through everyday decisions, actions and leadership, creating real value for our teams, clients and the communities we operate in.

To our employees, clients and partners, thank you. Together, we are building something that lasts.

JJ Rhatigan Sustainability Manager

How we build matter as much as what we build. Those words capture more than our approach to sustainability; they capture the responsibility we carry as a business to create lasting value through every decision we make. This Sustainability Report marks an important milestone for JJ Rhatigan: it shows the progress we’ve already made and sets a clear direction for where we’re going next.

‘The People Are the Plan’ isn’t just the title of this report, it’s the backbone of our entire sustainability strategy. Because every sustainability decision is ultimately a human one. Sustainability isn’t delivered by one person or one department; it’s delivered by every individual across our business — in the choices we make in design and procurement, and in the way we engage with clients, supply chain partners and local communities. Throughout these pages, you’ll see how our people are turning ambition into action, delivering measurable progress.

“Every sustainability decision is ultimately a human one.”

As Sustainability Manager, my goal is to build on the strong foundations we’ve laid and help embed sustainability into every part of our business. That means working collaboratively across teams to reduce carbon, maximise reuse and minimise waste, protect biodiversity, strengthen governance, and create lasting social value while supporting the innovation that lets us work smarter and more responsibly.

I am excited about what comes next. We have a strong foundation to build on, clear ambitions for the future, and an opportunity, in collaboration with our partners to shape the future of sustainable construction.
